READING GLASSES: How to Get a CLASSY and Fabulous Fit.
Why is the Strength and Magnification of Reading Glasses Important? Presbyopia is a condition that results in a decreased ability to focus on close-range objects. Fortunately, selecting reading glasses with the proper magnification will improve the ability to view objects at close range, without requiring a prescription. The level of magnification in the lenses of reading glasses is called diopter strength. A very weak magnification would be found in reading glasses with a diopter strength of +.75 or +1.00 (Size "LOW") and increased magnification is found in a diopter strength of over +2.50 (Size "HIGH").
Which Magnification Is Right for You? For most new users of reading glasses, it's highly unlikely that size HIGH will be required because Presbyopia typically starts as a minor vision impediment, and slowly increases with age. This is the average age/strength formula for the majority of individuals who wear reading glasses:
AGES 35-45 +1.25, +1.50, +1.75 strength CLASSY SIZE LOW
AGES 45-50 +2.0, +2.25 strength CLASSY SIZE MEDIUM
AGES 50 plus +2.5, +2.75 strength CLASSY SIZE HIGH
